At the Aozora Gakkou (‘Blue-Sky School’) Japanese immersion day camp, students from ages 8-16 are given the chance to experience Japanese culture and learn Japanese in a multi-age, multi-level immersion setting, located at the Sheridan Japanese School in Sheridan, Oregon. This non-profit program is open to both the students of Sheridan Japanese School as well as students from the surrounding communities. All funds go to support study abroad opportunities and club activities for Sheridan Japanese School students.
AOZORA GAKKOU 2013! Aozora Gakkou 2013 is open! For those who have not participated before, Aozora Gakkou is SJS's summer Japanese immersion camp. This year, due to 2012's numbers, we are expanding our camp to three weeks (M-Sat) July 22nd to August 10th. In expanding the duration of our camp, we have and will be expanding what we offer to your campers (also no fee increase since 2011!). Here is just the beginning of what we will offer this year: 1)Tenkara Fly-fishing and Archery from Jeff Gottfried 2) Martial arts and traditional art workshops taught by professionals 3) Portland Zoo and Japanese Garden field trip 4) Coast field trip
5) Additional major field trip (location: TBA) 6) At least one overnight per session 7) Expanded electives and workshop selections 8) Expanded Obon Festival
8) Expanded class and language-level offerings
9) Expanded staff: from 5 staff members to 8, with over half being native speakers of Japanese) 10)Expanded peer tutor and junior peer tutor opportunities.
Please keep in mind that while classes and workshops may continue for the duration of the three-week camp, each session is unique and will provide your students with an new and interesting experience. Even though we are still in the initial planning stages, this is going to be an awesome camp. We will be regularly updating the website (http://www.aozoracamp.org) so please visit it regularly. Once I have this information, I will give the students a paper-based application.
